In the paradox of existence and disappearance
How to define the space-time between existence and disappearance? Can I say it is the halt between two words in a sentence? Or is it an equivalent to the volume of a book from its cover to cover? Or is it the split moment when the book is closed?
It seems like that there is a conflict between existing and disappearing. It seems like that they are contradicting each other. Every existence implies death, for which death is the final destination for every existence.
When life is vigorous we don’t anticipate its end. Once it vanishes, our attempt is to search for its once glowing temperature in our memory. We try to preserve it in mind, for the fear that it may fade out gradually. My works are thriving from this paradox of existence and disappearance.
In my work Aura, the idea of a rejuvenation of death is demonstrated. Of the withered leaves I have collected, after the treatment of antisepsis process, their final state could be maintained. With my setting of the shoot, their ravishing beauty was revitalized. Originated in the 19th century, when the infant mortality rate was high, the parents would dress up their deceased children for posthumous portraits. This is a play back of the moment when the lost ones were alive.
Sixty seconds to wither is a video work counting down to 60 seconds with the wither of a rose. 61 drawings composed this video; the rose is withering, the petals are dropping, and the drawings are in fact in a reverse order from blossoming to bud. With the absence of life, the flash back to it existence is always tempting. When the counting is reaching from the16th to 17th second, the frame is not successfully processed. It pauses to show a “loading” error for 10 seconds, the petals stop dropping, hence 10 seconds of delay for the withering of the rose; at the same time, 10 seconds disappeared in my life. The video is looping, as I am counting from 1 to 60 precisely, but still, 10 seconds vanishes from every 60 seconds loop.
Awaking the awareness of being is always the approach of disappearance.
